Siena men’s basketball coach Gerry McNamara said Wednesday that his focus is on the Saints’ opening matchup with Duke, not the job opening at his alma mater, Syracuse.
McNamara, a former Syracuse player, addressed the attention surrounding the vacancy and said the talk was “inevitable,” while emphasizing that his priority is preparing Siena for its season-opening test against Duke.

With Siena set to begin its schedule against Duke, McNamara said his day-to-day focus remains on the immediate task in front of his team rather than outside discussion tied to Syracuse.
The comments come as Syracuse has an opening, drawing natural attention to McNamara because of his ties to the program. McNamara, however, reiterated that his attention is on Siena’s opener.
