Shai Gilgeous-Alexander did not find much comfort in individual recognition after Oklahoma City’s season ended earlier than planned.
Despite capturing his second straight MVP award, Gilgeous-Alexander called the year a “failure” after the Thunder were eliminated before they could return to the NBA Finals and defend their title.
Individual honor overshadowed by team disappointment
The Thunder entered the postseason with the weight of championship expectations, but their run ended short of the Finals. For Gilgeous-Alexander, the MVP award did not offset the disappointment of Oklahoma City falling before reaching the stage it had hoped to revisit.
His comments reflected the standard now surrounding both the player and the franchise. Gilgeous-Alexander’s individual season was again recognized as the league’s best, but Oklahoma City’s early exit left the campaign defined by an unmet team goal.
The result closed a season in which the Thunder were unable to defend their title, leaving their star guard to frame the year not by his personal accolades, but by the team’s playoff finish.
